Mrs. Appleby, EP Resident, Dies At Age 99


EAST PEORIA- Mrs. Admonisha Appleby, 99, of 134 Cole Street, died at 6:30pm Saturday at St Francis hospital, where she had been a patient for one day.

Services will be conducted at 2pm Tuesday in LeRoy Schmidt Memorial Chapel. Rev. Robert S. Swain of First United Methodist Church, will officiate. Burial will be in Fondulac cemetery.

Friends may call at the memorial chapel after 10am Tuesday until time of services.

An East Peoria resident since 1911, Mrs. Appleby had resided at the Cole Street address since 1921. She was born in Cramlington County, Northumberland, England, May 18, 1870, a daughter of Richard and Emma Ellery Daniel. She was married to Robert T. Appleby in Cramlington on Sept 21, 1904. He preceded her in death.

She is survived by one daughter, Miss Violet Appleby, with whom she made her home. She was preceded in death by a son, six sisters and three brothers.

FUNERAL RITES TODAY FOR MRS. APPLEBY, 84


East Peoria—Funeral services were held this afternoon in the Free Methodist church for Mrs. Florence D. Appleby, 84, the last surviving charter member of the church.

Mrs. Appleby died early Saturday at 143 Cole street, where she had resided for the last two years. Her death came one week after that of her daughter, Mrs. Hazel Appleby Thompson, with whom she lived, who died on March 10.

Burial was in Fondulac cemetery.

Mrs. Appleby, Longtime Area Resident, Dies


EAST PEORIA- Mrs. Florence Josephine “Muff” Appleby, 77, a native of East Peoria and a resident of Peoria since 1929, died at 1:30pm Friday in her home.

Services will be at 1pm Monday in Glen Oak Christian Church, Peoria. Rev. Charles Heyer will officiate and burial will be in Swan Lake Memory Gardens.

Visitation will be from 3 until 5pm, Sunday in Cumerford-Endsley Memorial Home, Peoria.

Memorials may be made to the memorial fund of Glen Oak Christian Church.

A daughter of Thomas and Maybelle Wright Arnold, she was born Jan 20, 1894 at East Peoria.

She married Earl Appleby Apr 11, 1917, at Peoria, and he survives.

‘John Appleby is called by death’

John Appleby, retired mine inspector and stationary engineer, died at 6:45pm Wednesday at his home, 114 Stewart Street, East Peoria, after an illness lasting several years.

Born in Morpeth, North England on May 4, 1862, the son of William and Agnes Smith Appleby, he moved to East Peoria 53 years ago. Mr. Appleby was a member of the East Peoria Free Methodist Church.

Surviving are his widow and the following children: Mrs. Elizabeth Becht, Mrs. Olive Bush, Mrs. Eliza Sommerfield, Mrs. Hazel Thompson, all of East Peoria; Lloyd Appleby, Mrs. Myrel McKinstry and Earl Appleby, all of Peoria: twelve grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren also survive.

Funeral services will be held at 2pm Saturday at the East Peoria Free Methodist Church with the Rev. A.A. Finders officiating.

Friends are invited to call at the Schmidt funeral home Friday afternoon and evening. The body will be removed from the funeral home to the church at noon Saturday to lie in state until time of service.

Lucille Appleby


CREVE COEUR- Lucille F. Appleby, 85, of 113 Apple Court, died at noon Saturday, May 22, 1999, at Proctor Hospital in Peoria.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30am Tuesday at Preston-Hanley Funeral Home, Creve Coeur Chapel. The Rev. Don Zumwalt will officiate. Burial will be in Roberts Cemetery in Morton.

Friends may call from 6 to 8 tonight at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the First Christian Church, 604 Groveland Ave., Creve Coeur, IL 61610.

She was born Nov 1, 1913, in Peoria to Anton “Tony” and Elizabeth Koeppel Oberstetter. She married Willard D. Appleby on June 13, 1936, in East Peoria.

Surviving are her husband; two daughters, Mrs. Robert (Bonnie) Madsen of Elk Grove Village and Mrs. Robert (Barbara) Kuhn of Nevis, Minn.; three grandchildren, Will (Tammy) Fotheringham of Washington, Mrs. Mitch (Julie) Mead of Edwardsville, and Mrs. Robert (Cindy) Smiley of South Elgin; six great- grandchildren; two sisters, Bernadine Coates of Silver Spring, Md., and Mrs. Ollie (Edna) Holzinger of East Peoria; and one brother, Clarence “Tony” (Suzy) Oberstetter of Peoria.

She was preceded in death by one brother.

Mrs. Appleby worked as a waitress at the Country Club of Peoria for six years. She then worked as a banquet waitress at the Hotel Pere Marquette in Peoria from 1955 to 1973.

She was a member of the Hotel, Motel, Cafeteria and Restaurant Employees Local 237 in Peoria.

She served as a girl scout leader in Creve Coeur during the 1950s.

Norman Appleby, Electrician, Dies Suddenly Monday


EAST PEORIA- Norman Daniel Appleby, 47, of 134 Cole Street, was pronounced dead on arrival at 5:10pm Monday at St Francis hospital, Peoria. He had suffered an apparent heart attack in the city parking lot while en route to his home from work at the East Peoria Electric Shop. An investigation is to be conducted by Peoria county Coroner Chauncey E. Wood.

Mr. Appleby was born in England on Nov. 4, 1905, a son of Robert and Admonisha Daniel Appleby. A resident of East Peoria since 1912, he had never married. He had been employed at the East Peoria Electric shop for the past seven years; prior to that, he was an electrician at Caterpillar Tractor Co.

He was a Past Master at Hilton Lodge 1143 of East Peoria, and was a member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 34 of Peoria, and of the American Rose Society.

He is survived by his mother and one sister, Miss Violet Appleby, both of East Peoria.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2pm Thursday in the chapel of the Schmidt Funeral Parlors. Rev. H.H. McFall will officiate. Burial will be in Fondulac cemetery.

Visitation will be at Schmidts after 3pm Wednesday.

‘Services Saturday For Robert Appleby’


Funeral services for Robert Appleby, 134 Cole Street, East Peoria, who died at his home Thursday morning, will be Saturday afternoon at the Schmidt funeral home. The Rev. H.H. McFall will be in charge of the services and interment will be in Fondulac cemetery.

Friends are invited to call at the funeral home Friday afternoon and evening. Mr. Appleby is survived by his wife, two children, Violet and Norman Appleby; and one brother, John Appleby, all of East Peoria.

Violet Appleby


EAST PEORIA- Violet E. Appleby, 75, formerly of East Peoria, died at 5:30am Sunday, July 23, 1989, in the Wesley Village Health Care Center, Macomb.

A memorial service will be held at 2:30pm Tuesday in the Wesley Village Retirement Center.

Friends may call from 1 to 2pm Tuesday in the Dodsworth-Piper-Wallen Chapel, Macomb.

Graveside services will be held at 1pm Wednesday in the Fondulac cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or the First United Methodist Church, of which she was a member.

Born March 19, 1914, in East Peoria, she was the daughter of Robert and Admonisha Appleby.

Her only known survivors are cousins.

One brother preceded her in death.

Miss Appleby was a church treasurer for several years. She worked in the office of the Tommy Thompson Co. for several years and last worked as a secretary at Caterpillar Inc.

Date of Death: July 23, 1989
