In the Military, Swedes often changed their names. During roll call when the name Andersson or Johansson was called and a hundred men stepped forward things got very confusing. So men would change their names to something meaning brave or quick. Some named themselves after mountains or trees. Here is a list of the most common names and their meaning.

Ahl = alder tree

Häger = heron

Ask = ash tree

Hägg = bird cherry

Asp = aspen tree

Hög = tall

Björk = birch tree

Kihl = wedge

Blixt = lightening

Klint = clift

Bloomster = flower

Kraft = strength

Borg = stronghold,bulwark

Krans = wreath

Brask = crisp

Krom = crown

Brax = carp

Kull = hill

Brink = steep hill

Kämpe = fighter

Bäck = brook

Käck = dashing

Dahl =valley

Lans= lance

Dristig = bold, daring

Lilja = lily

Elf = river

Lind = linden tree

Fager = fair

Ljung = heather

Flod = river

Lod = bullet

Fors = rapids
