30 October 1902

J.C. Pitman of Pre-emption, Mercer County married Miss Kate Logan of Sherrard, Mercer County last week in Davenport , Iowa .

Wm Wilmerton who came to Pre-emption, Mercer County in 1842 and who is over 80 years of age, will soon move to Rock Island

12 June 1902

John Foster married Miss Emma Titterington last week at the Old Foster home near Preemption, Mercer County .

Will Kurz of Rock Island married Miss Bertha Lentz and Bert Vinall of Sherrard, Mercer County married Miss Emma Volk last Wednesday. Both brides are formerly of Rural township, Rock Island County .

 

20 November 1902

G.B. Mauck of Aledo, Mercer County and J.C. Miller of Milan will open a livery stable in Rock Island on 4th Avenue and 22nd St .

13 November 1902

The Rev. John A. Griffin died Saturday at Sherrard, Mercer County where he had been pastor of the Congregational Church for several years.

March 15,1902

Claus A. Larson of Sherrard, Mercer County will be married March 18th to Emily ElizabethAnderson , daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Anderson of Bowling at the home of the bride. (March 26th issue: Claus Larson of Sherrard married Emily Elizabeth, eldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Peter Anderson of Bowling on March 18th at the residence of the bride's parents. Miss Ella Anderson is a sister of the bride and Albert Anderson is a brother of the bride. The bride has lived most of her life in Bowling. The groom is a young faraer near Sherrard. They will live east of Sherrard.

12 March 1903

Dr. W.W. Moorhead has sold his residence to R.B. Taliaferro and will build a nev residence next to C.G. Turner. (Aledo item)

Wm L. Ramsey, a Mercer County farmer, was found dead Thursday at the depot hotel in Monmouth, Warren County . He is survived by his wife and 4 daughters.

Charles Fall, a coal miner at Sherrard, Mercer County drowned Saturday in the Edwards River at Cable. The funeral was Sunday at Sherrard.

June 11,1903

Howard Griffin of New Windsor married Miss Sadie Carnaghan on Thursday at the home of the bride in Milan . The groom is the Superintendent of the Tile and Brick Factory at Griffin . The bride has always lived in this vicinity. They will live at New Windsor.

June 21,1903

Harry C. Smith of Cable, Mercer County married Miss Sadie A. Feath yesterday at the home of the bride's parents in Milan .

June 11,1903

The funeral of John Clark who died last Wednesday was Saturday at the Methodist Church In Pre-emption, Mercer County with burial in the Pre-emption Cemetery . He was an old resident of Bowling and was aged 72 years. He was born in Ireland and came to this country as a small child. The farm on which the parents settled has been the home of the dec'd for the past 62 years.

Hattie, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Samuelson, died Wednesday at the home. of her parents in Sherrard aged 19 years 23 days. She is survived by her parents, 1 brother and 1 sister. The funeral will be Friday at the United Brethren Church in Sherrard with burial in the Swedona Cemetery .

Mrs. A.D. Shearman of Pre-emption, Mercer County has been taken to the Watertown hospital. Her husband has been in Beaumont , Texas recently.

Caddy Wm Caddy married Miss Laura Oldfield, all of Cable, Mercer Oldfield County this week.

Archie Kasenburg married Ruth Parker, all of Cable, Mercer Parker County, this week.

Mr. and Mrs. Robert Park who lived on a farm near Viola, Mercer County died recently. Mr. Park died October 10th and his wife 2 weeks before. They are survived by 5 children 4 girls and a boy, all married. They were members of the Presbyterian Church.

PRE-EMPTION: Mr. Barney of Swedona is in Rock Island visiting his daughters, Mrs. Jno. Adams and Mrs. D.R. Cattenberg.

Katie, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Mat Zwickar living west of Sherrard, Mercer County , died Saturday aged 20 years. The funeral was Monday.

Mr. and Mrs. Fred Davis of near Keithsburg, Mercer County have Mosher been here visiting her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Wm Mosher.

.Miss Kate Hoefle of Sherrard, Mercer County has been here visiting her sister, Mrs. Newton Vanderslice.

Ashley Swithouse, aged 19 years, shot himself on Wednesday at his home near Hamlet, Mercer County . (February 25th issue: the funerwal was at the Presbyterian Church with burial in the Hamlet Cemetery . He is survived by his father, 2 brothers and 1 sister. His mother died some years ago.)

Mrs. Henry Wilson, nee Miss Emma Hoefle, died February 9th at her home, 1 mile north of Pre-emption. The funeral was Thursday with burial in the Little Cemetery beside her infant daughter who died a week ago. She married Mr. Wilson in March, 1902 and was aged 22 years. She is survived by her husband, her parents Mr. and Mrs. George Hoefle of Sherrard; and by 4 brothers -George, Fred, Chas. and Paul Hoefle; and by 3 sisters: Mrs. Mary Johnson of Cable, Mercer County; Mrs. N.W. Vanderslice of Milan and Kate Hoefle at home.

30 June 1904

BORN to Dr. and Mrs. W.W. Moorhead of Aledo, Mercer County , a boy last Friday.

27 October 1904

Dr. J.A.Hannon of Sherrard married Francis Edgar of Cable, Mercer County last Wednesday at Cable.

19 January 1905

Mrs. Wm Crawford died today at her home in Pre-emption, Mercer County aged 49 years. She was born in Moline and was married there in 1875. She has been a resident of Pre-emption for 6 years. 8 children survive - all at home except one.

A.L. Buck died last Saturday at the home of his daughter, Mrs.Dunker at Lincoln , Nebraska aged about 86 years. His wife died 4 years ago. Burial was at Humboldt , Iowa beside his wife. He is survived by 2 sons - Lemuel Buck at Bradgate, Iowa and Taylor Buck in New York City ; and by 2 daughters living at Lincoln, Nebr. He was married in Camden , now Milan , in 1846 and lived here for many years. He was a mason by trade. His children were born here. His wife was a daughter Pinkley of D. Pinkley and her brothers still live in Milan .

23 February 1905

John Holdsworth who was born in Pre-emption, died recently at his home in Iowa . He leaves a wife and 6 children. Burial was at Manilla, Iowa .

Wm Clarke of near Pre-emption has purchased the Alfred Peterson farm of 320 acres near Aledo, Mercer County.

 

16 March 1905

Zora, 1 year old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. N. Davis died Saturday at Roden, Mercer County after drinking poison. The funeral was Monday with burial in the Boden Cemetery. Mrs. Davis is the former Miss Sadie Brasher, daughter of John Brasher. She formerly lived east of the campgrounds.

6 April 1905

REYNOLDS: the body of the late Ephraim Gilmore of Goldfield, Nevada arrived here Saturday. He died March 17th. The funeral was Sunday at the Hamlet Presbyterian Church with burial in the Hamlet Cemetery . He was a brother of Mrs. John McAdam of Reynolds.

W.H. Wilson of Pre-emption married Mrs. Mary I. Lawson of Cable, Mercer County yesterday at the home of the bride's brother in Milan . The will live in Pre-emption.

22 June 1905

Charles D. Freeman of Viola, Mercer County married Eda Fain of ,Bowling on June 21st at the Presbyterian parsonage yesterday. Miss Hattie Fain is a sister of the bride, and Miss Hattie Hunting is a cousin. They will live in Viola.

6 July 1905

Joseph Pitman died Monday at his home near Pre-emption, Mercer County aged 86 years. He has resided near Pre-emption for the past 50 years; he was a farmer. The funeral was Thursday with burial in the Boden Cemetery .

12 October 1905

Engineer Scott was killed Saturday in a train wreck, 1/2 mile east of Pre-emption. He leaves a wife and 3 children - a daughter at home, a son in Rock Island and Mrs. John Mills of Sherrard. The funeral was Tuesday in Sherrard with burial in Orion, Henry County .

Wallace E. Crawford of Pre-emption married Miss J.M. Sullivan of Taylor Ridge on Wednesday in Rock Island .

Thomas B. Docherty of Pre-emption married Miss Jessie M. Pasenberg of Cable, Mercer County on October 25th at the Presbyterian effonage. The groom works for the Docherty Mining Company at Boden and the bride Is the 2nd daughter of Mr and Mrs, Frank Kasenberg.

16 November 1905

WIlliam C. Armstrong of Pre-emption married Miss Katherine Zeigler of Reynolds on Wednesday at the M.E. parsonage in Aledo, Mercer County . They will farm near Pre-emption.

31 May 1906

Chris Steinhaver, the Pre-emption shoeman, is visiting "the Fatherland".

Harry Bollis of Pre-emption is changing his address to Marshall , Oklahoma .

Emanuel Mayan who was formerly in the drug business in Pre-emption, Mercer County for 10 years,was found dead Monday in Davenport , Iowa . James Vance of Pre-emption is his father-in-law. He vas aged 34 years and was a native of this county. He went to Davenport 2 years ago. He is survived by his wife. Burial was at Pre-emption.

 

14 June 1906

William Vilmerton of Pre-emption, aged 85 years, has been judged incapable of handling his affairs by the court and his son has been appointed his conservator

5 July 1906

The funeral of. Mrs. Blakely was Saturday at Pre-emption.

Mr. and Mrs. Geo. Heofle (sic) learned Monday of the death of their son-in-law, Axel Johnston of Cable, Mercer County

Alex Johnson of Sherrard died Monday, leaving a wife and 6 small children. He is a brother-in-law of Mrs. Newton Vanderslice of Milan.

12 July 1906

Born to Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Sheppard, twin boys.

3 November 1904

REYNOLDS: The Rev. G.V. Peregoy was buried Monday in the Pre-emption Cemetery . He died on Friday. He was the father of 9 children, 7 girls and 2 boys, with the latter dying in infancy. All are married with the exception of Miss Verda and Miss Jessie at home.

28 December 1905

Mr. and Mrs. Charles Simmon celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary at Sherrard last Wednesday, December 20th. They have 7 living children:Mrs. Bosold of Grattinger, Iowa; George Simmon of Anthony, Kansas; H.P. Simmon of Grinnell, Iowa; C.O. Simmon of Geneva, Nebraska; Mrs. W.J. Coulter of Taylor Ridge; Mrs. Fowler of Denver, Colorado; John Simmon of Sherrard and William Simmon of Sherrard. There are 9 grandchildrenand one great-grandchild.' They have lived in Rural township for 39 years. They moved from their farm to Sherrard 6 years ago.

22 February 1906

A.B. Johnston, formerly proprietor of a hotel at Sherrard, is now at Peoria .

Arthur McPhearson of Pre—emption, Mercer County married Miss Grace Smith of Moline on Wednesday at the parsonage of the English Lutheran Church in Daveport, Iowa. They will live with Mrs. Julia Smith of Moline .

Chas. Clark of Sherrard married Miss Edith Sherrard on Thursday in Rock Island

Mrs. William Kale hasbeen visiting her sister, Mrs. M. Scott at Sheffield , Illinois .

7 December 1905

The remains of James C. Bethuman of Millersburg were buried on Monday in the Andalusia Cemetery . He was a resident here for a number of years and was in the mercantile business with the late S.M. Boney. He was born in February,1808 in Kentucky and died 2 December 1905 , aged 97 years. His wife died in 1892 and since then, he has lived with his daughters in Millersburg.

Stanley Couch will hold a public sale on December 14th at the farm of the late Mrs. B.F. Couch, 8 miles north of Sherrard and 5 miles southeast of Milan .

Mrs. Charlotte Root was divorced in Mercer Co. from John Root who a short time since, shot Eric Jancson of Bishop Hill and who is now in the state penitentiary at Alton.

12 Apr. 1854

Married on April 7th, William Johnston and Miss Mariah Conley of Pre-emption.

14 June 1854

Died in Preemption suddenly on the 3rd, Helen, daughter of Samuel and Lavina Dow, aged 1 yr., 10 mos.

29 March 1906

The 2-year old daughter of Barry Hill, a stockman of Mercer and Rock Island Counties, died Sunday at Cable, Mercer County in a fire. She was their youngest child and only daughter. The funeral was Monday at Cable with burial at Warsaw , Illinois

22 March 1906

 Born to Mr. and Mrs. Will H. Clarke, formerly of Bowling but now of Aledo, Mercer County , a daughter, March 20th.
