Shirley Shafer


Kewanee- Shirley M. Shafer, 58, of Kewanee died Sunday, April 25,1999 at St. Francis Hospital, Peoria.

Funeral services will he held 11 a.m. Wednesday at Zion Lutheran Church, Kewanee with the Rev. David LaMaster officiating.

Visitation will be this evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at Schueneman Tumbelson Funeral Home. Burial will be in the Mt. Auburn Cemetery in Colchester.

Memorials may be made to either the American Diabetes Foundation or the Zion Lutheran Church of Kewanee.

Graveside services will be Wednesday at 3 p.m. in Colchester.

She was born Oct. 7, 1940 in Industry, the daughter of Roscoe and Leona “Muff” (Simmons) Wetzel. She married Dwight L. Shafer June 24, 1962 in Colchester. He preceded her in death in 1964.

She was also preceded in death by her father in 1946l and one brother, William, in 1993.

Surviving are her mother, Leona “Muff” Wetzel of LaHarpe; tow brothers, Robert (Mary Lou) Wetzel of Blandinsville and Wendell (Ann) Wetzel of Stronghurst; two sisters, Marilyn (Jerry) Huston of Roseville and Evelyn (Eldon) Yard of LaHarpe; a sister-in-law, Louise Wetzel of Bloomington; as well as many nieces and nephews.

She was educated at Colchester High School, was a graduate of Western Illinois University and had a master’s degree from Northern Illinois University. Mrs. Shafer had taught home economics for the Lacon, Plymouth and Fox Lake school districts and for 27 years taught at Kewanee District 229, retiring in 1994.

Mrs. Shafer was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church of Kewanee, where she sang in its Chancel Choir and performed with the bell choir; and of the Retired Teachers Association. She was an avid seamstress, and enjoyed traveling and spending time with her nieces and nephews.
