O'Neil was
born Oct.
4th, 1824,
and closed a
beautiful
life at the
home of her
son L. H.
Metcalf in
Blandinsville
on Tuesday,
Nov. 2,
1915. her
birthplace
was in the
state of
North
Carolina.
She came to
Illinois
with her
parents when
but four
years old.
She was
married to
Joseph A. H.
Metcalf Dec.
25, 1845,
and of this
union 11
children
were born.
The husband,
two sons and
three
daughters
have gone on
before.
Those
remaining
are A. J.,
Cameron,
Mo., Geo.
W., Charles
M., Jerome
B., and
Lewis H. of
Blandinsville,
Ill. The
daughter is
Mrs. Addie
Wright of
Decatur,
Ill. Sister
Metcalf
became a
Christian in
a log church
at Orchard
City, Ia.,
seventy-five
years ago
where the
city of
Burlington
is now
located.
When the
church was
organized
here she
became one
of the
charter
members of
the Church
of Christ at
Blandinsville,
and has been
a faithful
and loyal
member ever
since. The
last seven
years of her
life here
has been
spent as an
invalid. Her
patience,
cheerfulness
and
composure
testifying
how the
Christian
life is a
blessing.
She was the
aunt of
Ex-Governor
Drake of
Iowa, her
sister being
Gov. Drake's
mother. She
was one of
the pioneers
of that type
which formed
the better
social life
and enriched
her
community.
The care of
her during
her last
years has
been gladly
borne and
has been a
blessing to
all who
ministered
to her. Her
stay her has
been 91
years and 29
days.
Funeral
services
were held in
the
Christian
church at
2:00 p.m.,
on Thursday
Nov. 4th,
the Rev. J.
G. Slink
assisted by
the Rev. a.
M. Hale of
Abingdon
officiating.
The
interment
was in Glade
City
cemetery.
