Louis Hollen Smith, son of Vincent and Mary Eliza Smith, was born in West Virginia April 28, 1851, and departed this life May 24, 1929. Came to Illinois with his parents when but five or six years old and settled southwest of Mason City, then only a small place of few buildings. He grew up here and has always lived here.

August 6, 1874 he was united in marriage to Elizabeth Holley, who departed this life Nov. 22, 1901.

To this union were born nine children, one son, Harry E. died in infancy. They are: Frank Smith, Fulton, Mo.; Thomas Smith, South Bend, Ind.; Jake Smith, Mackinaw, Ill.; Henry Smith, Chicago; James Smith, Belle Vernon, Pa.; Asa and Richard of Mason City, Ill., and one daughter, Mrs. James Patterson, also of Mason City.

After the death of the mother, Mr. Smith kept the home together and was both father and mother to the children until they were grown and could make homes of their own.

There are 22 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Also one brother, Mark Smith, Oakford, Ill., four sisters, Mrs. Jasper McDole, Havana, Ill.; Mrs. Martha Lancaster, Minier, Ill.; Mrs. Rachel Burgess of Kansas City, who was not present because of Ill health and Mrs. Mary Garner.

His last illness lasted 17 weeks.

The funeral was held at the Christian church, Sunday, May 26, 1929 at 2:30 o'clock p.m. conducted by Rev. J. Newton Baker.

Burial in Big Grove cemetery.

E. Smith and daughter of Belle Vernon, Pa., Mr. Tom Smith and sons, Paul, John and Oliver of South Bend, Ind., Mr. Henry Smith of Chicago, Mr. and Mrs. J. U. Smith and son, Mr. and Mrs. Will Collins, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Smith of Mackinaw, Ill., Mr. and Mrs. Charles Smith and son of Hopedale, Mr. and Mrs. Wilbur Smith, Mrs. Will Smith and son Tom, Mrs. Sid McDole of San Jose; Mrs. Will Taylor, Bloomington, Ill.; Mr. and Mrs. Mark Smith and Mr. and Mrs. Lonsberry, Oakford; Mr. and Mrs. Otis Arnold and daughter of Petersburg; Mr. and Mrs. H. J. Coffey, Greenview; Mrs. Jasper McDole, Mrs. Eva Momen and son, Havana; Mrs. Martha Lancaster of Mimier;; Mr. and Mrs. Walson of Delavan.

The music was furnished by a male quartette of Greenview, consisting of Paul Palmquist, Harry wernsing, Don Riley and Wm. Schenowiesse and Mr. Paul Palmquist, pianist.

The flower girls were Mildred and Alma Patterson, Geraldine Pantier, Edna Brownfield, Emma Jean Smith, Darlene Ford.
