HAVANA -- Alger F. "Bummer" Carpenter, 86, of 815 S. 10th died at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, April 26, 1995, at Mason District Hospital in Havana.

Born Sept. 2, 1908, in Lynchburg Township, Mason County, to Arthur and Effie Sarff Carpenter, he married Fern Kramer in 1939. She preceded him in death. He later married Vada Smith in 1956 in Beardstown. She survives.

Also surviving are one stepdaughter, Mrs. James (Eileen) Moak of Mississippi; two stepgrandchildren; two stepgreat- grandchildren; and two brothers, Paul of Janesville, Wis., and George of Chandlerville. He was preceded in death by six brothers.

He was a member of the Havana Fire Department for 40 years. He was fire chief for 35 years and operated the garage for a number of years.

He was a member of the Methodist faith.

Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Hurley Funeral Home in Havana. The Rev. Warren Hughes will officiate. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery in Bath.

Memorials may be made to Mason District Hospital.
