John S. Smith

John S. Smith (born Sven Johan Jonsson), born 5 January 1851 in Bjerkhult, Vena parish, dead 11 November 1934 in Cambridge, Henry Co., IL, USA. After some years working in Oskarshamn he emigrated to the U.S. via Copenhagen in 1870, lived for two years in Jamestown, NY, and then for a while in Tidioute, PA. He moved in 1873 to Iowa to manage a brick-works, but the company went bankrupt before any production was started. He stayed with E.A. Peterson in Moline, IL, from 1873 to 1878, and was after that for a year employed as a forwarding agent at the Swedish newspaper Scandia in Moline. In 1879 he moved to Orion, IL, where he was employed as a sales clerk. He was already by that time politically engaged (republican) and was after he moved to Cambridge in Henry County elected to several offices, mostly serving in the County Clerk’s Office and was in 1920 elected County Clerk. He retired in 1927. - Married in 1875 to Matilda Johnson, born in Ödeshögs parish, dead 24 augusti 1921 in Cambrigde, Henry Co., IL, USA.

Mauritz Smith , born abt. 1878 in Moline, IL, USA. Married and living in Cambridge, Henry Co., IL, according to a letter from his father to his sister Sofie in Lönneberga 8 February 1921.

Victoria Smith , born 188... in Orion, IL, USA. Married and living in Cambridge, Henry Co., IL, according to a letter from her father to his sister Sofie in Lönneberga 8 February 1921.

Florence (Flora) Smith , born 188... in Orion or Cambridge, IL, USA. Lived with her parents according to a letter from her father to his sister Sofie in Lönneberga 8 February 1921. Wrote 18 December 1918 a Christmas card to her uncle Axel in Lönneberga: ”Dear uncle Axel. It is a good many years since you went back to Sweden, but I remember you well and think of you all many times. Hope you all keep well. Wishing you all a very Happy New Year. With much love from us all, Lovingly, Flora.”
