Confederate
Cemetery
(POWs)
Rock Island County: Arsenal Island
This cemetery is for the Confederate soldiers who died at the prison camp
during the twenty months it was in operation. There were 1,964 soldiers who
died
from disease and other causes while living at the Rock Island barracks.
The cemetery was first located south of the stockade and then moved to its
present location in February, 1864. The cemetery was neglected for
many years until the erection of new stones in 1906.
It's been said
that the reason the stones are pointed is to prevent
the Union people from sitting on the stones with ease.
